What are your thoughts about Christmas?

Do you love it or do you hate it? Do you get excited just thinking about it or do you wish you could sleep through the whole business and wake up when it is all over?  Do you think it is just for children and if so why?

These are many questions that are voiced on a yearly basis - in fact just as often as Christmas itself - so why does it cause so many varying reactions, and is there anything that can be done to increase the peace and decrease the pressure?

Why do some people think that Christmas is just for the kids?  I think it may have a lot to do with the fact that a child seems to get all the exciting bits whereas the adults end up with the aggro, the bills and the washing up.  Well, there may not be a lot we can do about the washing up, but I remember as a child that it seemed to be a time when all the adults were really enjoying themselves talking ten to the dozen catching up on all the news while us children had to wait until they were finished before we could open our presents.  That was the longest half an hour of my life!

But what about the aggro and the bills - is that package inevitable?  What are the things human beings really need to make them happy?  People that love them, spending time with them, some warmth, some good food to eat (but not so much that you have to join Weight Watchers in January!) and some tokens to show that you care.

Christians start their preparations for Christmas on Advent Sunday, which this year is on the 30th November.  These preparations involve looking at oneself and ones behaviour and way of life rather than one's bank balance - or rather lack of it.  Christmas is about the love of God for his world; it is about Gods son Jesus being born into this world - the celebration of the birth of a special baby.  A baby that was not born in a private hospital and placed in an expensive crib, but born in a stable and placed in a cattle stall.  A baby born, whose future was to save the world not by defeating an earthly enemy but by crucifixion on a cross to bring people back to God.

The media are very good at bringing things to our attention, but amongst the advertising of the need for a materialistic Christmas are snippets such as a reminder that the materialistic West is backed by a traumatised third world.  12,000 Western African children are subjected to slave labour on the cocoa plantations that will help supply our Advent calendars and chocolates; sweat shop labour provides goods that we pick up for bargain prices.

So before we break the bank or go into an overdraft situation to try and make Christmas special, let us stop and think.  The man whose birthday we are celebrating came to teach us about real love - not something that you can buy. but the kind of love that asks of you time, companionship and thought for other people.

Sometimes we need to re-evaluate our way of doing things.  Is this Christmas the time for you?

The Legendary Lammas Christmas Fayre!
Yes, by popular demand the legendary Lammas Christmas Fayre will be open for festive business on Sunday December 7th.

This year it has a new time: doors open at 2pm.

If you have never been tempted to have a look before, then this is the year to get down to Lammas Village Hall, get in the festive mood and get involved.

For the past few years the fayre has gained an enviable reputation for the quality of Christmas gifts on sale and the sheer exuberance and fun of it all.

On the 7th there will be the annual kitchen gadgets and equipment stall (which draws people from miles around), Christmas cakes, Christmas decorations plus the usual outrageous games of chance, wheezes and scams! The tombola table will be packed with goodies, the raffle will have its usual ridiculously large array of prizes featuring yummy Christmas hampers and the home produce and River Café will both be doing brisk business.

So don't hold back head for Lammas Village Hall and come and see what the fuss is all about!

(By the way - if you have any goodies to offer for prizes, stalls etc then don't hold back either!  Call Pat Tinsley on 279696. All offers will be very welcome indeed.)

This will also be your first opportunity to come and see what the builders have done! On a brief set by the village hall committee they have transformed the toilets featuring wonderful wall tiles painted by children of Lammas. They have also installed a new kitchen, new windows and made some substantial alterations to improve the interior. We have yet to do the decorating& but then that is what we are raising money for!

Thanks for your support!

National Tree Week

To mark National Tree Week, on Sat Nov 29th we will be planting three Hornbeams (Carpinus betulus) in the bays created within the new fence around the play area adjacent to the Village Hall. The hornbeams are being donated to the village by Broadland District Council.

The existing purple leafed plums will be removed from the play area as they are all gradually being ravaged by honey fungus, and are becoming unsafe.  Broadland DC has kindly offered us more trees to replace these and the trees that were removed to make way for the Village Hall extension.  Additional planting of Amelanchier arborea 'Robin Hill', (in tree form so that the all important visibility is retained through to the play area). would provide some shade within the play area and enhance the Village Hall on this important corner of the village..

Amelanchiers would give us the attractive spring flush of flowers that the Prunus cerasifera nigra provided, whilst hopefully being resistant to the honey fungus, as well as giving us attractive leaf colour in the autumn. Broadland DC would help us by providing strong tree guards to help them get established, but we would need the support of the village - especially the younger members who use the play area - to ensure their survival.

Buxton & District WI News

On 13 November we held our Annual Meeting. The President, Secretary and Treasurer presented their reports and it was noted that we have had a variety of interesting speakers and some very pleasant outings this year.

Mrs Rita Caves, our WI Advisor, then presided over the election of the new committee and officers.

The Secretary, Rusty Howlett, was standing down, owing to other commitments, and she was presented with a pot plant as a small token of thanks for her hard work over the past four years. The remainder of the committee was re-elected en bloc, and two new committee members, Sallie Marshall and Mary Shepperd were elected.

Gwen York was re-elected President and Mary Shepperd was elected Secretary for the coming year.

The competition 'A Saucer' was won by Sallie Marshall, with Pat Fairhead second.

Plans were finalised for our Lunch Club meal at the Highway Nurseries, and for our WI Christmas Dinner at the Old Rectory, Crostwick

Our first meeting of the New Year will be at  7-30 on Thursday 8 January when Mr John Perkins will speak about his work helping in the aftermath of the Tsunami.

A gentle reminder for members - subscriptions will be due at the January meeting.  The competition will be 'A Bowl of Bulb'.

All are welcome at our meetings. We have members from Worstead, Swanton Abbott, Tunstead, Spixworth, Frettenham and Hainford and we especially extend an invitation to ladies from surrounding villages who may like to join us. If you are not sure if it is your 'cup of tea', why not come along as a visitor first? You can be assured of a warm welcome..

Buxton Photographic Club

Audio Visual was the subject of our October 20th meeting and very well supported it was.  Members brought along short (not longer than four minutes) AV programmes of their own making and own choice.  The subjects of the programmes were well thought out and obviously took much research.  One member delved into his archives and produced a programme of his time in the Royal Navy when sailors still went to sea.

Our last internal competition, entitled People, was as well-supported as ever and produced thirty-six prints much to the Judges surprise.  It still amazes to see the number of variations on a theme that members can produce.  Once again it was a closely fought contest with Richard Powell coming first, Gus Janes second and Tony Hallsworth, one of our newer members, coming third.

We have only two programmes left this year.  December 1st is our Print Battle with the Norfolk Photo Group and our AGM on December 15th.

On the 5th January we have a Print Battle with Norwich Photographic Society, so we hope there are't too many hangovers, and on the 11th there is a Studio Evening.   If you would like to come to any of these meetings please do so.  We would be very pleased to see you
